The EDPS held a press conference on Wednesday 15 June 2011 to present the main features of his activities in 2010 with regard to his supervisory, consultative and cooperative tasks.
2010 has once again been of major importance for the fundamental right to data protection. The Lisbon Treaty, ensuring a strong legal basis for comprehensive data protection in all areas of EU policy, has had an increasingly visible impact. The review process of the EU legal framework for data protection is also taking shape and attracting more attention.
The role of the EDPS as an independent supervisory authority has been secured in all the main areas of activity. This has led to significant progress, both in supervision of EU institutions and bodies when they process personal data and in consultation on new EU policies and legislative measures.
The conference also provided Peter Hustinx, EDPS, and Giovanni Buttarelli, Assistant Supervisor, the opportunity to address the current dynamic context of EU data protection as well as future challenges.
