As part of his Strategy for excellence 2013/2014, the EDPS organised a workshop on 10 April dedicated to the Smart Borders package. The aim of the round table was to share experiences from countries that implemented similar systems and to have a debate on the implications for data protection of both legislative proposals.

The EDPS will in the coming months issue an opinion on the Smart Borders package.

Summary of the meeting:

Everyday, personal information is collected, shared and used by individuals, organisations and public authorities. Recruiting activities, video surveillance, health data collection are just a few examples. On 28 January 2013, 47 countries countries of the Council of Europe as well as European institutions, agencies and bodies will celebrate the seventh European Data Protection Day. This date marks the anniversary of the Council of Europe Convention 108 on the protection of personal information, the first legally binding international instrument related to the field of data protection. This annual event will again be an opportunity for the EDPS and Data Protection Officers from EU institutions to focus on raising awareness among EU staff and others on their data protection rights and obligations. These rights and obligations are set out in the EU Data Protection Regulation and their implementation within the EU administration is supervised by the EDPS. A short film is available on the video page of our website. This is an entertaining and informative way to highlight some of the data protection rights and risks that are inherent in our everyday lives.

To commemorate Data Protection Day the EDPS, in cooperation with the European Parliament, have organised a joint conference What will the data protection reform change for EU officials and citizens? Peter Hustinx, Supervisor, Giovanni Buttarelli, Assistant Supervisor and Mr. Paul De Hert, Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels will take part in the panel discussion.

Don't miss A look inside, an original art exhibition centred on privacy and presented by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and The Privacy Commission of Belgium. Recently opened at De Markten in Brussels the exhibition presents the work of young European artists, who use their artistic expression to provoke discussions about privacy and its relevance in modern day life. The conference organised by Academy of European Law (ERA) in cooperation with the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) will provide participants with in-depth knowledge of the current reform measures taken by the EU in the area of data protection in criminal justice as well as with an update on the state of play regarding pending issues such as Passenger Name Records (PNR) and data retention and their impact on the right to data protection. Peter Hustinx and Giovanni Buttarelli will be among the speakers.

This event is organised by Academy of European Law (ERA) in cooperation with the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS).  It will be an excellent opportunity to discuss the most important changes expected to be introduced by the General Data Protection Regulation. The key topics will include: - The creation and implementation of new rights relating to the protection of data for the individual - The revised role of data protection authorities (DPAs) - Remedies, liability and sanctions - the expansion of administrative and judicial powers in data protection - The regulation of data transfer to third countries

Am 28. Januar 1981 verabschiedete der Europarat das Übereinkommen Nr. 108, das erste rechtlich verbindliche internationale Instrument, das mit Datenschutz verbunden ist. Anlässlich dieses Datums feiern die europäischen Institutionen und Organe sowie die Mitgliedstaaten des Europarats zum 6. Mal den europäischen Datenschutztag am 28. Januar 2012.

Diese Veranstaltung bietet dem EDSB und den behördlichen Datenschutzbeauftragten die Gelegenheit, die EU-Bediensteten über ihre Rechte und Pflichten hinsichtlich des Datenschutzes zu sensibilisieren - diese Rechte und Pflichten sind in der Datenschutzverordnung erwähnt, deren Umsetzung durch den Europäischen Datenschutzbeauftragten kontrolliert wird.

Um diese Veranstaltung zu unterstützen, wird eine Video-Botschaft von Peter Hustinx, EDSB, und Giovanni Buttarelli, stellvertretendem Datenschutzbeauftragten, für EU-Mitarbeiter und Bürger veröffentlicht. Dieses Video ist ebenso auf der Video-Webseite des EDSB zu sehen. Es behandelt das Thema Privatsphäre und Datenschutz als Grundrechte, und zeigt, wie die tägliche Verarbeitung personenbezogener Daten auch Risiken mit sich bringen kann.

Der EDSB nimmt auch an der 5. Internationalen Konferenz 'Computers, Privacy & Data Protection' mit Wissenschaftlern aus ganz Europa teil. Die Überprüfung des europäischen Rechtsrahmens für den Datenschutz, die Durchsetzung des Urheberrechts und die Privatsphäre, der Datenschutz und der grenzüberschreitende Verkehr personenbezogener Daten sind nur einige der Sitzungen, an den der EDSB aktiv beteiligt ist.

Wie jedes Jahr nimmt der EDSB ebenfalls an verschiedenen Veranstaltungen teil, die von der Europäischen Kommission und dem Rat organisiert werden.
