As part of his Strategy for excellence 2013/2014, the EDPS organised a workshop on 10 April dedicated to the Smart Borders package. The aim of the round table was to share experiences from countries that implemented similar systems and to have a debate on the implications for data protection of both legislative proposals.

The EDPS will in the coming months issue an opinion on the Smart Borders package.

Summary of the meeting:

Everyday, personal information is collected, shared and used by individuals, organisations and public authorities. Recruiting activities, video surveillance, health data collection are just a few examples. On 28 January 2013, 47 countries countries of the Council of Europe as well as European institutions, agencies and bodies will celebrate the seventh European Data Protection Day. This date marks the anniversary of the Council of Europe Convention 108 on the protection of personal information, the first legally binding international instrument related to the field of data protection. This annual event will again be an opportunity for the EDPS and Data Protection Officers from EU institutions to focus on raising awareness among EU staff and others on their data protection rights and obligations. These rights and obligations are set out in the EU Data Protection Regulation and their implementation within the EU administration is supervised by the EDPS. A short film is available on the video page of our website. This is an entertaining and informative way to highlight some of the data protection rights and risks that are inherent in our everyday lives.

To commemorate Data Protection Day the EDPS, in cooperation with the European Parliament, have organised a joint conference What will the data protection reform change for EU officials and citizens? Peter Hustinx, Supervisor, Giovanni Buttarelli, Assistant Supervisor and Mr. Paul De Hert, Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels will take part in the panel discussion.

Don't miss A look inside, an original art exhibition centred on privacy and presented by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and The Privacy Commission of Belgium. Recently opened at De Markten in Brussels the exhibition presents the work of young European artists, who use their artistic expression to provoke discussions about privacy and its relevance in modern day life. The conference organised by Academy of European Law (ERA) in cooperation with the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) will provide participants with in-depth knowledge of the current reform measures taken by the EU in the area of data protection in criminal justice as well as with an update on the state of play regarding pending issues such as Passenger Name Records (PNR) and data retention and their impact on the right to data protection. Peter Hustinx and Giovanni Buttarelli will be among the speakers.

This event is organised by Academy of European Law (ERA) in cooperation with the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS).  It will be an excellent opportunity to discuss the most important changes expected to be introduced by the General Data Protection Regulation. The key topics will include: - The creation and implementation of new rights relating to the protection of data for the individual - The revised role of data protection authorities (DPAs) - Remedies, liability and sanctions - the expansion of administrative and judicial powers in data protection - The regulation of data transfer to third countries

Le 28 janvier 1981, le Conseil de l'Europe adoptait la Convention 108, le premier instrument international juridiquement contraignant en matière de protection des données. Pour marquer cette date, les institutions et organes européens ainsi que les Etats membres du Conseil de l'Europe célébreront, pour la 6è fois, la Journée européenne de la protection des données le 28 janvier 2012.

L'événement donnera au CEPD et aux délégués à la protection des données (DPD) l'occasion de sensibiliser les fonctionnaires de l'UE et les autres personnes intéressées sur leurs droits et obligations concernant la protection des données. Ces droits et obligations sont énoncés dans le Règlement de l'UE sur la protection des données, dont la mise en œuvre est supervisée par le CEPD.

Pour marquer l'événement, un message vidéo de Peter Hustinx, CEPD, et Giovanni Buttarelli, Contrôleur adjoint, sera diffusé aux membres du personnel de l'UE et publié en ligne sur la page vidéos du site Internet du CEPD. Cette vidéo met l'accent sur la protection de la vie privée et des données à caractère personnel en tant que droit fondamental et met en évidence le traitement quotidien de données personnelles et les risques afférents.

Le CEPD participe également à la 5è Conférence internationale 'Computers, Privacy & Data Protection' organisé par des universitaires venant de toute l'Europe. La révision du cadre légal européen en matière de protection des données, l'application du droit d'auteur et la vie privée, la protection de la vie privée et les flux transfrontaliers de données personnelles sont quelques-unes des sessions auxquelles le CEPD participe activement.

Le CEPD prend également part aux célébrations organisées par la Commission européenne et le Conseil, comme chaque année.
