Le 28 janvier de chaque année, les États membres du Conseil de l'Europe et les institutions de l'UE célèbrent la Journée de la protection des données. Elle marque l'anniversaire de la convention du Conseil de l'Europe sur la protection des données, connue sous le nom de "Convention 108". Il s'agissait de la première loi internationale contraignante concernant les droits des individus à la protection de leurs données personnelles.
