Das Ziel der polizeilichen und justiziellen Zusammenarbeit in Strafsachen besteht darin, durch die Verhinderung und Bekämpfung von Straftaten ein hohes Sicherheitsniveau für die Menschen in der EU sicherzustellen.
Hierfür arbeiten nationale Polizeibehörden und nationale Justizbehörden zusammen, erforderlichenfalls mit Unterstützung von EU-Agenturen wie Eurojust, Europol und dem Europäischen Justiziellen Netz. Diese Zusammenarbeit umfasst die Sammlung und den Austausch von Informationen über Personen.
