Biel, Technology and Privacy Unit
Throughout my studies as well as my prior career, the EDPS (and the EDPB) has stood out to me as a guiding light for data protection and digital rights across Europe. So, when I was shortlisted for the Blue Book traineeship, EDPS was my first and only option.
During my time here, among other exciting tasks I had the opportunity to analyse the legal implications of different emerging technologies, which made me feel at the forefront of developments in the field.
As a highly specialised institution, the EDPS enabled me to deepen my knowledge while gaining first-hand, day-to-day insight into how EU institutions operate in practice. This combination of technical substance, real responsibility and public-service mission made the experience both demanding and rewarding.
Melis, Governance and Internal Compliance Unit
From the early years of my legal studies, I had an interest in data protection because of its close connection with emerging technologies and its core role in safeguarding fundamental human rights in the digital age. Considering the EDPS’s central role in this field, I wanted to become part of it and applied for the Bluebook traineeship.
Building on my previous experience as a lawyer and data protection consultant, I was keen to understand how compliance operates within the European Institutions. During my traineeship at the Governance and Internal Compliance Unit, I had the opportunity to work with the Data Protection Officer of the EDPS, on the institutional compliance matters. I also had the chance to discuss the issues that raised my curiosity with professionals from different fields, which further broadened my perspective. Being a trainee at the EDPS, a specialised institution with an encouraging and supportive working environment, has been a highly rewarding experience.
Philipp, AI Unit
With a lifelong interest in innovative technologies and a background in Computer Science and Policy Making, I was keen to explore how digital innovation is shaped by public regulation. When I was selected for the Blue Book traineeship, the EDPS AI Unit felt like a unique opportunity to contribute to safeguarding the most influential digital technology of our time, while supporting the EU’s innovative capacity.
Working on the AI Act, one of the most actively debated and evolving regulatory frameworks, allowed me to closely follow how public and private actors cooperate in shaping legislative responses to emerging technologies. At the same time, the supportive team environment at the EDPS encouraged my professional development, while enabling me to expand my professional network with highly knowledgeable people from diverse fields.
Annalinda, Policy and Legislative Consultation Unit
As a trainee at the EDPS, I explored the intersection between data protection and fundamental rights. During my Master’s in International Protection of Human Rights, I worked on a research project at the National Centre for Research in Italy on the secondary use of health data. That experience sparked my interest; so when I was shortlisted for the Blue Book traineeship, I immediately chose the EDPS.
With a background in law and human rights, I wanted to learn more about a field with many layers and real-life impact. I soon realised data protection plays a much bigger role in daily life than I had expected. Being in a small, specialised EU institution allowed me to deepen my understanding of this complex field. I’m grateful to have joined the Policy and Legislative Consultation Unit, a stimulating environment where I learned something new every day.

I joined the EDPS as an Information and Communication trainee. Its commitment to privacy deeply aligned with my values. When choosing a position for my Blue Book traineeship, I knew that I wanted to help communicate its work.
It is a rare opportunity to join one of the smaller EU institutions that makes a difference in the EU and beyond. I especially valued working in a tight-knit team, where every colleague matters. It is the kind of environment I wanted to be part of.
My time was filled with opportunities and freedom to grow as a professional. By working on different projects, I developed and acquired new skills. With a team that listens to your ideas while pushing for excellence, every day is different. This challenge encouraged me to constantly evolve. Paired with the mission of public service, it made for a fulfilling experience.
