The application of robots and their functions are proliferating at a significant pace. The rapid increase in the use of robots in homes, in the workplace, in hospitals and industrial environments should stimulate further reflection on how they can benefit society as a whole.

The robots collect a vast array of information from their environments and adjust their functionalities (in ways not always anticipated by developers); the challenges they pose for, among others, data protection and privacy, illustrates some of the difficulties in the interplay between law, science and technology.
