General Data Protection Regulation

Following many years of intense political debate on data protection in the European Union, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will finally become law across the EU in May 2018 and is designed to be the cornerstone of data protection in Europe. It sets out directly applicable rules on the rights of data subjects, the duties of those organisations that demand the processing of personal data and those that do the processing (data controllers and processors), international data transfers and the powers of supervisory authorities.

2011 Annual Report - A consistent and effective approach to privacy and data protection is needed

2011 was a very productive year, in line with our efforts to ensure consistent and effective protection of privacy and personal data in a fast-changing, interconnected world.In its support of technological advances and economic development, particularly in an age of austerity, it is important that the EU administration does not lose sight of the right of the European citizen to privacy and data protection. Only a joint effort to apply a consistent and effective approach will maintain this fundamental right.
